Baffin Island: Polar Bear on Sea Ice
Even though the ice prevented landing and fjord exploration, the situation had its positive moments. Like spotting a creamy-white polar bear in the open ice, having just killed a bearded seal and relaxing next to the meaty carcass, digesting his dinner. He seemed totally oblivious to over a hundred people watching him from the front open deck of the ship, cameras rolling and clicking. In fact, he posed at times while taking short strolls and glancing toward this strange white iceberg of a ship. Eventually he sat sideways and…. pooped – and a hundred cameras immortalized the moment! Polar bear diet consists of 98% seals, and open ice hunting is the primary and often only way of feeding for polar bears, especially praying on seal pups on their snowy layers.
