Bahrain: Eating Tikka Black Lemon

Bahrain has a dish that is unique to the island and found nowhere else (al the ouch it supposedly originated from Iran) – Tikka Black Lemon. It’s lamb meat rubbed and marinated in crushed dry black lemon and then grilled on open fire. I got hooked on this thing during my first visit to Bahrain in 2015. The dry lemon gets re-hydrated on the meat and then burned into coal-like cover on fire, resulting in absolutely unique and unmistakable succulent tangy taste. The tikka meat is served with the traditional tannour bread. Of course we went a bit nuts and tried everything else on offer – lamb chops, hearts and livers, with green garlic leaves, onions, hummus, peppers, and sweet lemon. It to die for!
