Benin: Ouidah – Temple of Pythons

Benin is all about voodoo traditional religion and voodoo keeps one animal above all others – the royal python. The Temple of Pythons is located in the very center of Ouidah and is rather unassuming set of small buildings, and a small voodoo statue and some paintings. But all that changes when you enter the temple – 60 pythons live here curled into balls all around the small room – in the floor, the shelves, all the corners and Books and crannies. You can even touch some of them. The door of the temple is open for the night and they come out into the open and then return back. Royal temples are not dangerous to humans and have been revered for centuries, especially in Benin.
