Bougainville: Venturing into the Jungle

While the center of the Bougainville island is mountainous and is covered by cloud forest with orchids (see previous post), most of the rest along the coastlines is a low-lying jungle. I ventured there for a very brief time, just to see the towering trees, weird colorful bugs and spiders, never seen by me tropical plants and nuts, mushrooms on trees and ground, and loads of insects. While there were no mosquitoes by day, there were super tiny invisible ants than dropped all over my arms and neck and feet – and they ferociously bite, setting your body on fire – 19 bites and counting.
