Cabinda: Se Cathedral & Square in Cabinda

Cabinda’s capital is also named Cabinda and this is where the independence of Cabinda from Portugal was proclaimed in 1975. The independent state lasted for a year until 1976, when Portugal decided to give Angola its independence – and the warring factions of MPLA and UNITA quickly kicked the Cabinda’s sovereignty issue off the table. Today, Cabinda is a pretty town set over hilly terrain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with some of the best oil deposits in Africa (in fact Cabinda produces 75% of Angola’s oil). The central square in town is an atmospheric large square mixing socialist propaganda on one side with a massive catholic cathedral on the other. Worshipping ladies in colorful clothing crowd at the entrance to the soaring house of god.
