Catalonia: Montserrat Monastery

The monastic complex of Montserrat is one of Catalonia’s most famous attractions. The Montserrat mountains rise very abruptly and sharply from flat plains and look otherworldly with jagged spiky peaks (“Montserrat” actually means “serrated mountains”). Almost like a scene from Lord of the Rings, on top of the mountains sits the Montserrat Monastery with the massive building of the Basilica of Monserrat at its core. It houses a carved statue of Black Virgin of Montserrat, that pilgrims and tourists from all over the world come to walk by. It’s very crowded and very touristy, especially around 1pm when the famous Montserrat Boys choir sings.
