Chile: Salar de Atacama

Salar de Atacama is the largest salt pan in the Atacama desert. Two mountain ranges surround the depression on both east and west and water has no drainage outlet – so it just slowly dries here in a bizarre dry salt desert. Salar de Atacama is 100 km (62 mi) long and 80 km (50 mi) wide, and while most of it is salt crystals and plateaus, some parts are covered with water. Flamingos can often be spotted here.
