Colombia: Nemocon Salt Mine

The entire area of the Cordillera mountains north of Bogota used to be a massive inland sea lagoon that eventually got uplifted and turned into vast salt deposits in the rock. Several salt mines operated here in the 18-19th centuries during the salt boom. Nemocon Mine is one of the largest and nearly 2km of its underground tunnels are open to public. Salt stalactites and spectacular brine pools with surreal reflections are top attractions. Also, this was the mine where the movie “33” about the Chilean miners trapped underground starring Antonio Banderas was filmed, and the entire movie set (including the extraction device that was used in Chile) are on display here. Above ground, there’s also a museum with some dinosaur bones discovered in the salt deposits.
