Colombia: Manizales

At the highest elevations in the Purace National Park lies the unique alpine ecosystem of paramo, known in this area as Paramo de Paletara. Its totally otherworldly, like a scene from Avatar. paramo is technically the high elevation tundra, just below the snow line, freezing and melting all the time. The hardy plants dominating the area are from the sunflower family and known as Espeletia, or called locally ‘frailejones’, with succulent woolly leaves and think trunks. And paramo spread to horizon in a spectacular landscape of the high Andes!
