Comoros: Last Lava Flows on Karthala Volcano
Mount Karthala dominates the landscape of the Gran Comore island, rising to 2361 m (7746 ft). It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, having erupted over 20 times in the last 100 years, including the last eruption in 2006 which was confined to the crater on the top. in 1972 however, lava flowed and streamed from a side fissure and into the ocean over miles of sloping terrain. The nature is slowly reclaiming the land, but its going to be many years before anything can be planted here.
