Crete: Heraklion

Heraklion is the capital of Crete, but it isn’t the most beautiful island on the island (Chenia and Réthymno beat it by a wide margin). Nevertheless, white it is the fifth largest city in Greece, its old town core is quite compact although extremely crowded and hectic. It was one of the major Venetian ports and as such the Venetian touch is everywhere – the fortress, the buildings, the churches, and marble covered paths. And of course – a fountain in the heart of the town with lions and other sculptures. Defensive walls surround the entire old town and particularly the waterfront.
