Cuba: Trinidad – Around Town

Trinidad is one of the oldest towns in Cuba, founded by the Spanish in 1514. With its grand Plaza Mayor and spectacular Santísima Trinidad Cathedral and Convento de San Francisco, it’s easy to see how this is a premier UNESCO World Heritage site. The streets are all cobblestone, and the houses are painted bright pastel colors with wrought-iron windows and doors. The entire town seems to have stopped developing in 1800s – everything has a century old feel to it, yet it is perfectly restored and in immaculate condition. Climbing to the top of the Cathedral’s Bell Tower (with many bells along the way), one can get a bird’s eye overview of the town and the surrounding Escambray mountain range.
