Cyprus: Aphrodite’s Rock

This sea-stacks and the spectacular coastline along the Cyprus’s southern shore are supposedly the birthplace of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. It is also known as Petra tou Romiou and Rock of the Greek. The legend of Aphrodite’s birth is a bit creepy however – Gaia (Earth) asked her son Cronus to cut off his father’s (Uranus) testicles. After his did that, he threw them into the sea, hence the sea-stacks. The sea started foaming and from the foam (aphros is Greek) rose a beautiful maiden Aphrodite…. Still, the happy ending notwithstanding, one should not try this experiment at home.
