Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo – Columbus Lighthouse

Columbus Lighthouse aka Faro a Colon is a massive cross-shaped mausoleum on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, supposedly housing the remains of Christopher Columbus. It was built for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas in 1992. The gargantuan structure is also meant to resemble a lighthouse and it beams light into the sky at night that is visible as far as Puerto Rico (there’s actually 157 beams of light). Dominican authorities claim what the remains inside belong to Christopher Columbus, however Spain refutes this and did DNA testing in the Cathedral of Seville that proved that Columbus is interred there. Dominican Republic refused to do the same DNA testing.
