France: Calais – Hotel de Ville

Calais really doesn’t have much to offer – it’s a gateway to the English Channel and packed with trucks and duty free shops. There is one thing that stands out and it is the magnificent Hotel de Ville (that is Town Hall) in the central square in the heart of town. The building was designed in spectacular neo-Flemish style of the 15th century and built in 1885. The belfry tower looks almost surreal and is one of the tallest belfries in France. There are also statues by Roden in front of the building.
