France: Cap Gris Nez – Bee Orchids

This northern orchid is known as Bee Orchid and it’s easy to see why – its flowers resemble bumblebees very closely in shape, color, and size. What’s more, the orchid exudes a scent that resembles that of female bumblebees thus attracting males to land on the flower and attempt lovemaking while inadvertently pollinating the plant. Known as Ophrys Apifera in Latin, the unusual flower is common along the French Opal Coast.
