Germany: Halle

Halle used to be the chemical industrial powerhouse of DDR in the socialist days which is mostly shut down now. Still, 30 years later the city still feels rather soviet in some ways. There are several interesting attractions here – the stunning 4-tower 16th-century Marktkirche Cathedral and an even more impressive Roter Turm aka Red Tower – both standing in a larger atmospheric central square of Marktplatz. There is also an impressive fortress in town – Moritzburg.
