Germany: Mansfeld Castle

Mansfeld Castle in the German state of of Saxony-Anhalt. The castle stand on a high rock overlooking the picturesque village of Mansfeld. The first mention of the castle here goes back to 1229, by 1540s, this was one of the largest fortresses in Germany, in 1675 it was completely destroyed and razed to the ground and then finally rebuilt to its present shape. There are turreted towers, church with a belltower, courtyards, and a moat and some ruins. Martin Luther grew up in the town of Mansfeld.
