Germany: Marksburg Castle

Marksburg Castle is one of the most spectacular among several dozen castle that sit on high banks of the Rhine. In fact, it was the only Rhine castle that was never destroyed. The fortress was established in 1100 and built up further during the Middle Ages. The location is just stunning – on the highest point above Rhine with spectacular views of the valley and river below. Inside the castle, many rooms preserve artifacts of the past centuries. It takes a drive up the hill, then a hike up to the castle, and then climbing staircases once inside – it’s all vertical.
