Germany: Northern Germany Food Recap

Here’s a recap of several northern Germany states – North Rhine Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Maklenburg-Western Pomerania. Close to the Baltic Sea, seafood plays omni-important role in the quinine here (unlike say Thuringia with their bratwurst sausages). Herring is all shapes, marinates and presentations was everywhere and we totally overloaded on it, especially on seasonal matias herring. Traditional Hamburg dish of labskaus was interesting albeit a bit bizarre – mashed corned beef and potatoes. And it’s the season of white asparagus that Germans apparently go nuts for – serves with Hollandaise sauce, or new boiled potatoes, or a piece of pork shop or steak. And of course – beer – every little town making it own.
