Germany: Nuremberg

Nuremberg is a large city in the middle of Bavaria with over 3/4 million people, but the historic old town is surprisingly easy to get to and explore on foot in just about a few hours. The old town was nearly bombed into oblivion during WWII but has been fully restored to its medieval glory. The skyline is dominated by spectacular 14th century gothic St Lorenz church with its twin towers. Nearby is the vast Haultmarket with the Townhall, a famous ornate 14th-century “Beautiful Fountain”, and another church – Frauenkirche. And plenty of other historic architecture and monuments all around with cobblestone streets lined up with coffee shops and stores – surprisingly pleasant for a large city.
