Germany: Schleswig – Schloss Gottorf

Moving through northern Germany on way to Scandinavia – the first stop (from the places I haven’t seen before) is Gottorf Castle in Schleswig. The estate existed here from 1161 and different royal owner built different castles. In 1504, It became the property of Christian I, the king of Denmark who build the castle. Frederick I, his son, expanded it some more, and then the dukes of Schleswig later built some more structures. The beautiful whitewashed castle has an even more beautiful inner yard and holds a spectacular museum of medieval art and woodwork. And a separate building holds an ancient Viking galera.
