Germany: Maulbronn Monastery

Maulbronn Monastery is the best preserved medieval Cistercian monastery (a whole mini-town actually) in the entire Europe, founded in 1147. Surrounded by walls and defensive towers are a series of churches and other buildings around a large court. The monastery was one of the first places in Germany to be added to the UNESCO list. Built and expanded through the ages, it has many architectural styles from Romanesque to Gothic.
