Guyana: Fort Kyk-Over-Al

The oldest fort in Guyana is the Fort Kyk-Over-Al. It was built by the Dutch in 1616 deep in the Essequibo River estuary on a tiny island. Not much remains from the fort now, except for one stone arch and many broken stones. The fort saw some major fighting for this mostly uninhabited jungle – British came and took control, just to be pushed out by the Dutch, who later got attacked by the French and Spanish privateers. The island is small but you feel history standing on this land. Also nearby is a small waterfall on the river bank, worthy a quick hike.
