Iceland: Icelandic Food Recap

Icelandic food doesn’t surprise with variety or particular deliciousness, and the country is seemingly obsessed with junk food like pizzas, pizza rolls, and hotdogs (which were quite awesome actually). We tried to go for the more authentic dishes, including the culinary extremes of the fermented shark (hakarl), boiled sheep head (svid), and minke whale steak. Grilled Arctic char was fantastic, as was the omnipresent lamb. Another traditional item – kjötsupa – lamb soup – we sampled more then once. Yet another traditional Icelandic dish was plokkfiskur, a stew of boiled cod filet and mashed potatoes. Harðfiskur – dried fish jerky – was a great snack during the day. And to finish it all off – brennivin – the national liquor of Iceland, and it’s basically a caraway-seed flavored aquavit. Brrrrrr.
