India: Kanha NP – Gaur

Not many people probably heard of it, but India has its own “version” of the North American and European bisons – Gaur. Technically, it’s the largest bovine aka cattle in the world and pound for pound they beat the American bison (although they appeared smaller – most of the ones I saw were females with calf and females are about half the size of the male). Gaur is also the tallest wild cattle. Massive animals, gaurs are browsers – that is they mostly eat foliage off trees and bushes (and I saw them in action over and over, sticking the massive tongue out to rip off the leaves). The have white feet and look like they are wearing socks.
