Kodiak Island: Around Kodiak Town

And here we are on the Kodiak Island, long a bucketlist item of mine! Kodiak is the capital town on the island with about 6000 people calling it home an all the transport connections with the mainland via air or ferry going through it. Kodiak is a beautiful waterfront town with several islets offshore, a couple marinas full of boats (I think everyone on the island own a boat), and mountains rising just behind it. The town was established during the Russian time a Pavlovsk and was the main center of sea otter pelt harvesting in Alaska. Many street names as well as historic churches and buildings bear Russian name and have Russian onion domes and crosses. Everything in town is about fishing – even trash cans have salmon on them, as do all the graffiti. Oh, and the local Subway has a sub sandwich with Alaskan Wild salmon, only in Kodiak!
