Libya: Sabratha – Roman Theater

Without a doubt, the Roman Theater at Sabratha is a spectacular and mind boggling site – one of the largest and best preserved Roman theaters in the world. It was built between 175-200 AD, founded by Emperor Marcus Aurelius and then continued by his son Commodus, and finished by Septimus Severus (another emperor). The theater had three stories with massive columns and a stage adorned with reliefs with different scenes of Roman mythology portraying gods like Hercules, the Three Graces (females), Hermès, and so on. It’s hard to even grasp the scale of this massive structure – you feel tiny standing under the columns in the stage, and even smaller when looking from the top of the seats. Once again – you have it absolutely to yourself, your guides, and the fish is the Mediterranean right behind the Theater! Imagine: one of the most stunning and spectacular Roman sites in the world without a single tourist!
