Libya: Tripoli – Janzur Tombs

In 1958, a local farmer was digging on his property when he stumbled on an ancient burial tomb. A total of 19 tombs were found, most containing jars and pottery and one have exquisite well preserved fresco painting inside in the walls and roof. Each tomb is small – just enough to fit a coffin and put some jars of goodies around – but it’s quite amazing the quality of the preserved painting that are probably from the Roman times and are over 2000 yeas old give or take. There are drawings of animals, people, angels, and flowers. Above the tombs, there is a small museum displaying various items found here, including absolutely amazing ancient glass vase!
