Malta: Tarxien & Hypogeum

The town of Tarxien holds two UNESCO treasurers – megalithic temples of Tarxien and the nearby underground Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, un underground multilevel megalithic temple. The former was closed, while the latter required an advance reservation for a specific time slot and watching a 45 minute movie before entering the actual site for 10 minutes or so with no photography allowed. Both sites date to about 3500-4000 BC. The town of Tarxien itself is interesting with Basilica of Christ the King and Church of Saint Ubaldeka, made (like everything else in Malta) of the yellow stone and towering above the jumble of cobblestone streets with tightly-packed houses with overhanging Maltese balconies.
