Mexico/Chiapas: Sumidero Canyon

The deep Sumidero Canyon (Canon del Sumidero) is just a dozen or so km away from Tuxtla Gutierrez in the mountains above the city. Sumidero Canyon’s vertical walls rise as high as 1000 m (3300 ft), with the river turning up and down multiple times in spectacular 90 degree turns during the 13-kilometre length of the narrow passage of the Grijalva River. The entire canyon is a national park and there are 5 overlooks along the twisting road to get panoramic views of the canyon, one more stunning then the previous one. The walls of the canyon drop very steep and the canyon overall, with its dark granite color, reminds of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado in the USA.
