Mexico/Oaxaca: Santa María del Tule

East of Oacaca is another small historic town worth a visit – Santa María del Tule. It’s famous for the ancient Tree of Tule – El Arbol del Tule. This massive cypress tree is 40m wide and 42m tall and is estimated to be around 2000 years old. It is often cited as being one of the oldest and widest trees in the world (although to be honest, it doesn’t look that impressive). The tree’s volume is around 700-800 cubic meters and weight of 630 tons. The tree’s existence was chronicled by both the Zapotec the Spanish that founded the city of Oaxaca. Next to the tree is a beautiful and colorful church, Templo de Santa María de la Asunción.
