Mexico/Puebla: Atlixco

Atlixco is another beautiful town in the western Puebla state and a Pueblo Magico. The settlement existed here long before the Spanish arrived, but the official founding of the city was in 1579. A large hill aka mountain – Cerro de San Miguel mountain – dominates the center of town and the streets climb steeply up toward the top. At the bottom is a large central square – Plaza de Armas with Santa Maria Church on it. A much more beautiful church is San Augustin Church a few blocks away, yellow in color and decorated with beautiful figurines dating to mid 17th century. Similarly decorated is another 17th century church – red-colored La Merced
