Mongolia: Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs

Entering the Gobi Desert, the first place of interest you see are the Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs in the north. A deeply eroded sandstone plateau of red clay is shaped into hoodoos, platforms, canyons, and single rocks. This is the Mongolian version of the Bryce Canyon, though smaller in scale. What makes this place most interesting (although you don’t see any of it), is that this is where most of the dinosaur eggs were found, as well as the remains of 15 distinct species of dinosaurs, including the infamous Velociraptor. You can explore the cliffs by walking the landforms from above, descending into the canyons, and even climbing the hoodoos.
