Morocco: Fes – Medersas el-Attarine & Bou Inania

Two beautiful medersas (Islamic religious schools) are tucked it deep inside the narrow and dark streets of the Fes medina. Mere doors from outside, the both open with magnificent open space courtyards decorated with centuries old Islamic art. The Medersa Bou Inania was built in 1350 and its courtyard is considered one of the most decorated in the world with carved Koran inscriptions and myriads of colorful tiles. Medersa el-Attarine was built in 1325 and is also bursting with elaborate tilework and intricate wood-carvings.
