Norway: Laerdal Tunnel – World’s Longest Tunnel
If you don’t wanna spend half-a-day twisting along the Aurlandsvegen Mountain Road, you can shortcut it via the world’s longest Laerdal Tunnel (aka Lærdalstunnelen) on Route 16. The tunnel goes almost in a straight line for 24.51 m / 15.23 miles underground, connecting Lærdal and Aurland. The tunnel took 5 years to building between 1995 and 2000 and cost 113 million USD. There are several emergency pullouts inside the tunnel when you can stop and check it out. Just beware of trucks speeding by.
