Peru: Cusco

Cusco was the heart and capital of the former Inca empire and a major trading town when the Spanish conquered it in the 16th century. The european went on building beautoful baroque churches and lining the streets with colonial buildings. Cusco is located at a breath-taking (literally) elevation of around 3,400 m (11,200 ft). The center of the colonial Cusco is Plaze de Armas with the Cathedral of Santo Domingo in the middle. Cusco is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
