Sao Tome: São Tomé Market

An absolutely spectacular and dynamic and insanely hectic market in the heart of Sao Tome is one of the most authentic markets I have seen in Africa. Sao Tome is a pure and isolated country, with a very closes non-convertible economy and small population, blessed however with great volcanic soils and perfect climate to grow pretty much anything anytime. Abundant sea supplies plenty of fish and shellfish. And it’s all on display here – almost every resident survives on subsistence level of agriculture, growing meager crops and then selling them to buy something else of value – there are greens and vegetables, fruits, cocoa beans, sweet potatoes and taro root, fresh and salted fish, chili peppers and spices that I have never seen before, and so much more of various cool stuff.
