Saudi Arabia: Al Ula – Jabal Ikmal

The Valley below Jabal Ikmal north of Al Ula holds the highest concentration of ancient ore-Arabic inscriptions and drawings on the rocks left by successive civilizations – Aramaic, Dadanitic, Thamudic, Minaic and Nabataean. Dadan was a major caravan crossroads in the ancient times and everybody going through was leaving an in inscription around Jabal Ikmal. Some inscriptions look like simple scrolls and drawings, while some are are 3D-like engravings. The largest portion of inscriptions date to around 1st century BC and describe the religious matters as well as daily life – there are pictures of camels and sheep. The size it truly mesmerizing and quite unique, like an open-air library.
