Senegal: Saint Louis – Old Town

Saint Louis is the old colonial capital of the French West Africa, the city dates back to 1659, and it had been the foremost important colonial city of France in Africa for over 300 years. The historic old town and the heart of the city is located on a narrow (2km long by 400m wide) island in the mouth of Senegal River. It’s like a mini Manhattan of sorts! The old colonial architecture is everywhere and feels like it has not been renovated or repaired from the times of Louis IX – the city is slowly falling apart. But it’s still great to stroll around and enjoy. Interestingly, the century-year old bridge leading to St Louis was designed by Eiffel.
