Buryatia: Sayan Mountains

The Sayan Mountains run an almost straight line in southern Siberia and used to demarcate the border between Russia and Mongolia (they now lie entirely in Russia). The range goes for over 1500km (1000 miles). The average height is about 7-9k feet with sharp tooth-like peaks standing like a henge of sorts – the transition from an absolutely flat steppe to the granite and marble towers is so stark that you wonder if it’s a mirage. The mountains seem to have their own weather system as storm appear constantly brooding above them.
