Socotra: Spinner Dolphins

Pods of hundreds is spinner dolphins can be seen along the northwest coast of Socotra – there is a current here, abundant with fish, and dolphins congregate here. Spinner dolphins are some of the most common small dolphins in tropical waters all around the globe and they got their name for the insane acrobatics they do when jumping out of the water and spinning around several times. A spinner dolphin can make 2-6 spins in one leap. They also swim in massive pods and you can watch dozens surface at the same time together, often following the boat. This was perhaps the biggest pod of dolphins I have ever seen (and I’ve seen a lot of dolphins).
