Spain/Andalusia: Almeria – Cathedral & Townhall

Almeria was a rich city both under the Moors and then Christians, as the trade flourished and passed through here between Europe and Africa and the Middle East. Berber north African pirates often raided Almeria and consequently its Cathedral (where most of the riches were) was built in 1522 as a real fortress with four towers, thick walls, and tiny slot-like windows. Inside the dark interior there are several richly decorated altar rooms and walls. Not far from the Cathedral is the ornate townhall with a courtyard, a stella, and plenty of palms.
