Spain/Andalusia: Malaga – Alcazaba of Malaga

On to Malaga… the Moors surely didn’t waste time building massive fortresses during the 10th century at the height of the Hammudid dynasty. And the Alcazaba (Fortress) of Malaga is the best example of it as the best preserved moorish fortress in Spain. It was built over the site of an ancient Roman fort (in fact a massive Roman theater is just outside the Alcazaba walls), reusing some of the Roman materials. Massive walls, multiple layers of them, square towers, and the hilltop position made this fortress almost impenetrable. When it was finally captured by Christian armies in 1487, the siege of Malaga became the longest of the Reconquista Wars.
