Spain/Extremadura: Merida

And I finally got to the UNESCO-listed historic city of Merida. Merida was founded in 25 BC as Emerita Augustus in the Roman Empire, a major Roman outpost on the Iberian peninsula. As such, Merida has more Roman monuments then any other city in Spain – a perfectly preserved Roman Theater, Roman Bridge, Temple of Diana, Roman Amphitheater, Trajan Arch, Case del Mitreo, and more – all spread around the historic core of the old town. But there’s also so many other attraction – a beautiful bullring, ancient Moorish Alcazaba fortress, medieval Santa Maria Cathedral, and wonderful Plaza de Espana. The city is just jam-packed with exploration material!
