Sri Lanka: Rekawa Beach

Rekawa Beach is world known as the sight of turtles coming out at night laying eggs. The long yellow sand beach is not really swimmable for humans as the current and surf are too strong at this southern tip of Sri Lanka. This, however, doesn’t really bother giant sea turtles. As you walk along this beautiful wide palm-fringed beach, you encounter fresh turtle tracks, often nearly 50-100m offshore on the higher sandy ground where they laid eggs last night. The whole beach is a biosphere reserve and turtles are protected.
