Svalbard: Texas Bar – Dead Polar Bear

When hiking at Texas Bar, we came across a carcass of dead polar bear. He apparently died of malnutrition and was a clear example how the global warming is devastating the polar bear population in Svalbard. Polar bears are marine animals and their diet mostly consist of seal that they hunt from the ice. As the temperature rise, Svalbard spends less and less time each year without ice cover. The bears often travel for hundreds and thousands of miles following the retreating ice, often relying just on twigs for food. Sadly, for this bear, this wasn’t enough.
