Sweden: Malmo

Malmo is an interesting combination of old medieval historic building and new glassy futuristic architecture. The historic old town consists of three interconnected main squares lined with old ornate building. In the center of the largest square there is a statue to King Gustav who took Malmo from the Danish. Opposite it is the spectacular Malmo City Hall from 1546 and just around the corner is St Petri Cathedral from the 14th century. Outside of the old town is the Malmo Slott (fortress) built in 1437, complete with round towers, moat, and gated bridge. The city is full of canals (kind of like Amsterdam) and people on bicycles (again like Amsterdam). Contrasting all the old stuff are spectacular modernist glass building and futuristic architecture and monuments. Also nice fish markets with an occasional classic Volvo parked nearby.
