Timor Leste: Baucau

Baucau is the second largest city in the country of Timor Leste (which is not saying much, it’s only a few dozen thousand people). It is one of the oldest Portuguese colonial outposts and as such is replete with beautiful colonial buildings (such as restore Pousada de Baucau), churches, cobblestone streets resembling the patterns of Macao, and city walls still bearing Portuguese insignia. (As a side note – everyone in Timor Leste speaks 4-5 languages: a local dialect, a common local dialect understood throughout the country, Portuguese being taught in school (and subsequently totally useless), English being taught at universities, and often Indonesian as a remnant of the old occupation).
