Turkey: Anemurium

The Mediterranean coast of Turkeunis packed with historic ruins and attraction and one of the first on our exploration was Anemurium. This was the ancient city at the outskirts of the Roman Empire in the Roman province of Cilicia, later Isauria. The city is located near a high promontory that marks the southernmost point of Asia Minor. The settlement existed here since Hellenistic times, but reached its highest point under Romans. An earthquake seriously damaged the city and it was eventually abandoned around the 7th century. The city ruins are vast and covering the large span of the sloping coastline and the hills nearby – the ruins dot the landscape as far as the eye can see.
